(edit: Thank you =kreelah for the new title. The previous one was a Baby Dragon and the Aurora)

Sorry for the veeery long description. The last paragraph is about the creation process, you can skip it if you're not interested.

This was done on PabloDraw, but the main difference between this one and my other works is the font (oh, and the colours too). This font is the MS-DOS 80x50 font, it's called like that because a 640x480 screen is 80 characters wide and 50 characters tall. As you can see, the characters are almost square, and if you view it with almost any other font, it will look completely distorted. Um. Anyway. I chose this font because I'm nostalgic. I had a very old computer and it worked with that font. The colours are ANSI colors, that's why this is in the ANSI section. It's basically coloured ASCII, but since it's something more than just plain ASCII, I didn't want to submit it there.

Now, to the process (oh, I love to explain the process, it makes it all worthwhile!).

  1. I made some experiments to get used to this font, and I found out that 8 is the best filler (because $ looks odd). I found the perfect gradient to be 8O%:'. The concept I had in mind was completely different from this, I wanted something like a cocoon in the center of a checkered board.

  2. I started with the head and the eye made of 8's, and went antialiasing at the same time. I drew a weird shapeless thing instead of the body. At this stage, I tried many different characters for the antialiasing, and the brackets seemed to work perfectly. The concept went through many stages (an alien, the sea, the space) until getting to the dragon. I ended up with the eggs, the dragon, the sky and the floor, and started making the gradients.

  3. I found the sky to be too plain, so I added the two "planets" in violet. Everytime I add a new element on a background, I have to carve a black outline around, so I did that. The planets didn't look good in solid style, so I shaded them too (using the same gradient I explained before, just modifying the shape).

  4. To make the waves, I deleted some characters one by one until having outlined the shape, then I smoothed the outlines. As simple as that.

I really want to get that solid ASCII tutorial ready before next month. I hope it will help you understand all my verbose. :giggle:

Note: This has absolutely nothing to do with the ASCII Art Revolutions contest. It's not worth submitting it and I have something else in mind... mwahaha.

That is so intricate! I love it, you know I saw it as a thumbnail and thought
"Is J doing Pixel Art again?"
But then I looked closer and it just knocked me back! Thats truly amazing! When text art looks like this it's just, wow!
:D :D :D :D
Definitely your best!
P.S Can't wait to see what you've made for the ASCII Art Revoulutions Contest!
:iconskypager:
definately a nice piece, but the other two asciis were your best ;)

Wow, Dig that.
I love the moon/planet in this

the egg cracking just looks insane, How the hell did you do that? O_O

This is just full of effect, Great job!

You never cease to amaze me with your textmode art. The style looks somewhat demoscene-ish, even though the subject is different. I don't think I've seen an ANSI or ASCII like that before. The filling and dithering styles look really good, though I think you shouldn't make use straight lines of the same character (like you've done with the % and O). The outlining works very well.

The planets and the swirls in the sky are my favorite part of the picture. I can't help thinking the baby dragon looks odd, it's a bit like a horned larva or something. I probably wouldn't have placed it so close to the center of the picture. The eggs might also look better if they weren't so similar in size (as in, with more perspective).

The colors are good, but I think you could have made the piece even better by mixing the colors, that might have made the planets look even better and you could have shaded the eggs (with gray) too.

This one is very retro looking, like the start screen of an old game. I like the composition and the way you did the gradients and even the shadow of the dragon. Nice moon too. great work! I think if you added shading to one of his arms (the far away one) you should have shaded all of the dragon and the eggs. But anyway I love it
:iconjsepia:
Thanks! :) This was just more simple.
:iconjsepia:
Thank you! I also thought about using gray to shade the eggs, but it would have looked jagged. I also tried mixing background and foreground colors, but I ditched that idea for the same reason. It would have worked if the piece wasn't so full of round shapes.

The straight lines do look odd, I'm even wondering if I should forget about the shading, because I don't see any better way to shade.
